Seeing Red: 20 or so years after the Velvet Revolution shook off the yoke of Communist rule in November 1989 it seems that the people of Prague are finally able to poke fun at their past. But unlike neighbouring Germany, who seem gripped in a frenzy of ostalgie (nostalgia for the east) with museums and shops and hotels and tours dedicated to recreating life behind the iron curtain, the Czech are examining their totalitarian past with a much less wistful eye at the Museum of Communism in Prague. There’s not much you don’t have to pay for in Prague, even entry in to most churches attracts a small fee, but the good news is there are lots of free attractions in and around the city if you know where to look and when to go.
